On April 3, 2018, Ambassador Katalin Annamária Bogyay, Permanent Representative of Hungary to the UN, addressed the Group of Friends of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations on Preventing Violent Extremism and Sustaining Peace at the meeting organized by the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC). Ambassador Bogyay highlighted the importance of action and collaboration from the entire international community to tackle the global threat of violent extremism.

The meeting began with the opening remarks of H.E. Mr. Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, the High Representative of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations.

Ambassador Bogyay said that tackling the global threat of violent extremism requires action and collaboration from the entire international community. Hungary has been a great supporter of preventive diplomacy and mediation. Hungary is strongly committed to fighting against violent extremism and terrorism. Hungary believes that the architectural reform of counter-terrorism efforts inside the UN may generate a more effective appearance towards eliminating all related threats.

Ambassador Bogyay said that ending the culture of impunity is a major contributor to conflict prevention and sustaining peace on national and international levels. Since ensuring accountability for serious crimes helps us to bring about reconciliation, address injustice, promote human rights and build peaceful, stable and resilient societies. Ambassador Bogyay emphasized the need to develop more creative approaches to diplomacy. This includes the continued promotion of women's roles in peace efforts. Women indeed need to be at the forefront of creating and sustaining peace, from the local to the international level, if we want to have any chance of succeeding.
