The Security Council, under the Presidency of Japan, held an open debate addressing complex contemporary challenges to international peace and security on December 20, 2017. In allowing this debate, the Security Council gave the wider UN membership an opportunity to be heard on this important topic.
Ambassador Bogyay outlined a number of steps in order to tackle these challenges more effectively.
She stressed the importance of taking the reform forward. Ambassador Bogyay pointed out that now we have a rare opportunity in front of us to help both the organization and its Member States to address the structural shortcomings and empower the UN to move out of the functional silos, integrate the approach of prevention and to enhance the coherence of activities of the UN in the field.
Ambassador Bogyay reaffirmed Hungary’s firm commitment to addressing water related challenges. She said that countries and regions should undertake coordinated efforts and adopt both urgent and long-term measures on water resources management. It is truer now than ever before that “water connects, it does not divide,” she added. She encouraged convergences so that water can find its best place at the UN development system.
She also emphasized the role of women in the maintenance of peace and security. She stated that the rights of women and the struggle to uphold them in every corner of the world is the moral imperative of the 21st century.
