Sixteen people died in the coach accident which occurred in the vicinity of Verona, in Italy, just before midnight, one person in a critical condition is being kept in an artificially induced coma, two persons are severely injured, ten persons have serious injuries, while thirteen have light injuries. Twelve people survived the accident without injuries, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó told the press.

On 10 January 2017, the Security Council – on the initiative of Sweden - held a ministerial-level open debate on conflict prevention and sustaining peace. Ambassador Katalin Bogyay spoke at the event and thanked Secretary-General Guterres for resolving already on his first day in office to “put peace first”.

From 28 to 30 November 2016 the Government of Hungary, in cooperation with the World Water Council, successfully organized the Budapest Water Summit 2016 to give momentum to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to water. During the three-day conference Heads of State and Government, Ministers, high-level representatives of international organizations, business, the scientific community and civil society have gathered in Budapest, Hungary to promote the practical implementation of water-related objectives in the SDGs and the Paris Agreement. The event provided an opportunity to highlight that water connects, it does not divide.

H.E. Mr. Peter Thomson President of the 71st session of the UN General Assembly held a plenary debate to kick-off this years’ round of the Intergovernmental Negotiations (IGN) process on the Question of equitable representation on and increase in the membership of the Security Council. In her statement H.E. Katalin Bogyay permanent representative of Hungary explained our countries position concerning the Security Council reform and called for urgent action to make the most important decision making body of the UN more representative of the world it supposed to protect.

On 5 October, the EU, Austria, France, Germany, Hungary, Malta, Portugal and Slovakia deposited their instruments of ratification of Paris Climate Agreement, thereby triggering its entry into force on 4 November 2016.
